AFTER nearly a years tussle, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has granted a safai karamcharis demand for study leave.
It followed the NCSCs to the BMC to grant Sunil Yadav leave or face charges under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The panel had visited Mumbai on February 12 after the PMO asked it to intervene in the case,as first reported in The Sunday Express on February 9.
The BMC had ignored a series of leave applications by Yadav,33,a second semester student of a two-year course in globalisation and labour at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Yadav,a Class IV employee, wanted the leave to complete his Masters programme. In response to an RTI query, the corporation had replied that a safai karamchari is not qualified to avail the leave because what he will learn is not related to his duties.
