Adulterated drugs: CBI arrests two pharma co owners

The CBI arrested the proprietors of two pharmaceutical companies for allegedly manufacturing adulterated and spurious medicines.

The CBI on Thursday arrested the proprietors of two pharmaceutical companies for allegedly manufacturing adulterated and spurious medicines.

As part of its special drive,the CBI carried out raids from May 12 to 19 in New Delhi,Nagpur and Chennai and 62 surprise checks. Six cases have been registered by the agency and proprietor of two pharmaceutical companies in Nagpur — Gurbachan Singh of J P Herbal Pharmacy and Navin Gadekar of Nalini Ayurvedic Company — have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing spurious medicines.

CBI Director Ashwani Kumar said the raids were conducted to check the supply and manufacturing of spurious drugs,sale of expired medicines and supply of spurious drugs through CGHS and other channels.

During the special drive,surprise checks were conducted at seven Central government hospitals in Chennai,Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram,said Ashok Kumar,Joint Director of the agency in Chennai.

Based on information that five pharmaceutical companies at Pondicherry and a distributor in Chennai were manufacturing and distributing substandard medicines,the agency raided these firms and took samples which were sent to the Central Drug Testing Laboratory.
