A Dozen for 2012

12 musicians to take you through this new year

Leonard Cohen: The 77-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter’s 47-year-old illustrious career has churned out 11 memorable albums. However,he has only produced three in the last 20 years. As Cohen gets set to release his next,Old Ideas,on January 31,2012,expectations are high. Love, loss, death and sexuality remain Cohen’s favourite topics even in this 10-song album. Hopefully, something memorable will come out of this album too.

Madonna: In 1998 pop diva Madonna collaborated with music producer William Orbit for her hit album,Ray of Light. It won four Grammys and is considered to be among her best till date. After 14 years, the two stars have again collaborated for Madonna’s upcoming album,to be released in March,2012.

Lady Gaga: The hysteria around Lady Gaga’s 2011 album,Born This Way,has barely died down, but the musician has already announced her next. With very little clarity on the title or the release, fans can only wait to see if Gaga will enthrall them all over again.

Green Day: Billy Joe Armstrong may be busy acting in the Broadway version of American Idiot and creating a band with his immediate family members, but he also has a set of 15 songs ready which may get into an album any moment. The three-member punk rock outfit has smuggled politics into their music in the past and is expected to do the same in this one. The songs, which will be a part of the album, were played by the trio in a private concert in California,USA. Will we get a new Boulevard of Broken Dreams? We hope so.

Band of Skulls: With their dizzying rock n’ roll elements — adrenaline pumping riffs, thumping beats and raw lyrics — they were hard to ignore when they launched their debut album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey in 2009. With vocals by Russel Marsden (also on guitar) and Emma Richardson (also on bass),and Matt Hayward on drums,British alternative band Band of Skulls’ new album Sweet Sour has already generated a lot of buzz in the industry. The album will release on February 21.

John Mayer: Originally planned for a October 2011 release,John Mayer’s follow-up to his 2009 album Battle Studies; Born and Raised, suffered a setback when he was diagnosed with granuloma,a serious throat condition that affects the vocal cords. However, the acoustic rock artiste, who has seven Grammy awards in his kitty, has been declared fit. The much-awaited album will be released in early 2012,though the exact dates are yet to be worked out.

Mumford and Sons: Their debut album Sigh No More came out in 2009,but it still manages to rock the charts. British alt-rock band Mumford and Sons are in the process of culling out their yet-to-be-named second album in late 2012,a project they claim will produce a new genre — “doom folk”.

Slipknot: Joey Jordison, drummer of heavy metal band Slipknot, confirmed that they will release their new album in the second half of 2012. A highly anticipated one, this will be the band’s first release since the demise of bassist and band co-founder Paul Gray.

Paul Mc Cartney: The End was the song The Beatles collectively recorded for their last album,Abbey Road (1969). Now band member Paul McCartney, who has,so far, enjoyed a successful solo career, has decided to rewind and explore the music that made them such a hugely successful band. He has teamed up with Grammy awardee Diana Krall and producer Tommy LiPuma to release his yet-to-be-titled album on February 7.

Aerosmith: Aerosmith started off as an excellent hard rock band, with a huge fan following. So even though they have not updated their style since their inception in 1970,or released a complete album of original music since 2002,they have survived, thanks to some good music produced early in their career. But 2012 will see them come out with some glam rock in their 15th studio album. Let’s Dream On.

Ringo Starr: January will see the release of another former Beatles member Ringo Starr’s 17th solo studio album. The album,Ringo 2012,has nine songs and collaborations with several musicians, including,Richard Page, formerly of Mr. Mister.

Lamb of God: Lamb of God,one of the most important bands of the New American Metal genre,is set to release their new album Resolution early next year. The band has released a single,Ghost Walking, which has been received with great adulation. The entire album is expected to notch things up further.
