The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has unearthed a diesel theft racket at the Kasganj diesel shed of the Northern Eastern Railways in Kanshiram Nagar district. Nine men have been arrested.
The ADG (Law & Order),Brij Lal said the racket involved some railway officials and a group of drivers of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC),Agra depot, who used to steal diesel, replacing it with kerosene at the Kasganj shed, causing loss of several lakhs to the Railways every day.
The STF,he said, has arrested three railway officials, three drivers and three conductors of the tankers and an IOC contractor. Three tankers ¿ each containing 12,000 litres of kerosene ¿ were also seized from the railway shed.
The SSP,STF,Naveen Arora, who led the operation, said they began the probe following a tip-off. Investigations revealed that the IOC depot in Etmadpur area of Agra district supplies four to eight tankers of diesel to the NERs Kasganj shed every day. The Railways has daily consumption of 30,000 litres of diesel and the shed keeps a stock of 3 lakh litres of the fuel at a time, the SSP said.
Arora said Mohammad Shafiq Ansari,Shamsuddin and Abdul Salam posted with the Kasganj shed as inspector, head clerk and mechanic were found involved in connivance with the drivers and conductors of the tankers and an IOC contractor,Pappu.
The tanker drivers and the contractor used to replace one to three diesel tankers with the kerosene ones during delivery at the railway shed. The kerosene tankers used to be emptied in diesel stock, the SSP added.
The diesel ¿ worth Rs 7.5 lakh a tanker ¿ used to be sold off elsewhere. Each litre of the kerosene supplied from the IOC depot is Rs 20 cheaper than the diesel,Arora said.
The role of any IOC man is yet to be found in the probe,he said.
The ADG said that a team of officials from NER,Bareilly and those from IOC,Agra have also left to Kasganj shed to inquire into the racket.
