Food Minister K V Thomas has lost yet another opportunity — the third in a row — to go on a foreign trip, thanks to the Food Security Bill. He had to cancel two trips — one to the Vatican and other to Rome — as the government was preparing to bring an ordinance to enforce it. With the ordinance in place,Thomas was preparing to visit Canada on the invitation of the Canadian agricultural minister from July 22 to July 26. He had to cancel this visit also because of the two-day media conclave of the Congress that began on Monday in which he had to brief spokespersons from across the country on the food security legislation.

HOME HURDLE

National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials have reasons to grudge the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The NIA made several requests to the MHA seeking approval for foreign visits by its officials to investigate cases, especially relating to fake currency seizures. In recent past, fake Indian currencies were seized in several countries and the NIA wants to visit each of these countries for investigation. Many of these proposals have, however, been shot down by the MHA with a stern suggestion that the NIA needs to focus first on the seizures made in the country.

MONSOON MISERY

While denizens of the Capital were getting used to wading through water-logged Delhi, even VIPs had a tough time. As the heavy downpour brought Delhi to a standstill last Saturday,Vice-President Hamid Ansari’s entourage was on its way to Jamia Millia to attend the funeral of the father of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid. Ansari however, could not make it as he got stuck in traffic for almost two hours. He had to turn back and head home.

MISSING IN ACTION

After having triggered a political controversy with his ‘Indian Mujahideen was formed after Gujarat riots’ tweet,Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed will be missing in action for a fortnight or so. While the war of words continue between the BJP and the Congress,Ahmed is set to leave for Canada on a private visit with his family on Thursday. He will celebrate Eid with his son who lives in Canada and will return only after two weeks. Before leaving for Canada,he met Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Incidentally, eight alleged members of the IM,who were arrested recently, belong to Madhubani in Bihar from where he had lost the last Lok Sabha election.
