Thirty-eight Sri Lankan Tamils, supposed to be en route to Australia for illegal migration, were nabbed from Ernakulam district in Kerala by the Intelligence Bureau.
According to sources, the group had been staying at two rented houses at Kothamangalam and Pookkattupadi in Ernakulam rural for last couple of weeks. Along with the Lankans, comprising four children and four women, three Keralites all of them members of one family who acted as local agents in the human trafficking, were also taken into custody.
Sources said they had come from Chennai to take fishing boats from Kochi to leave for Australia. Three fishing boats have been made ready at Munambam harbour near Kochi for the refugees. The agents, part of a larger network engaged in human trafficking, had got in touch with the Lankan Tamils from Chennai a few months ago.
