3 held for Manipal gangrape

Analyzing cellphone location data for the night of June 20 when a 22-year-old medical student of the Manipal University was abducted

Analyzing cellphone location data for the night of June 20 when a 22-year-old medical student of the Manipal University was abducted from campus and sexually assaulted, police in Udupi district on Thursday arrested three locals allegedly involved in the attack.

Two autorickshaw drivers Yogish,30,and Hariprasad Poojary,27,and a part time autorickshaw driver Anand,25,were arrested. Yogish and Anand attempted suicide after the law caught up with them, the police claimed. An autorickshaw allegedly used to kidnap the student was also seized.

The fourth year medical student was abducted on June 20 at around 11.30 pm and taken to a secluded place and allegedly gangraped by three unidentified men, according to the complaint filed with the police by the university’s estate manager. The incident came to light after the student was dropped back to her place of residence by one of her attackers and informed her room mates who alerted college authorities.

IGP Pratap Reddy said it was “technical data” that helped the police narrow in on the suspects. He said that the attack was carried out randomly by the three accused after they “encountered her by chance on the campus while on a joy ride in an auto”. “There was no prior acquaintance with the victim,” the IGP said.

He said it was yet to be ascertained whether the attackers were under the influence of alcohol. The gangrape created a furore in Manipal and Udupi district with the police coming under severe criticism over delays in nabbing the culprits. With the victim and her family not directly participating in the probe, the police relied on information from doctors,a counselor and a woman officer who was allowed a brief interaction with her.

Two of the arrested men have some prior crime records. The three are expected to be produced in court on Friday.
