3 Assam cops held for arms sale to rebels

A member of the pro-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was also arrested.

Three Assam Police personnel including a havildar were arrested in a series of raids in Nalbari and Baska districts in lower Assam on Wednesday, leading to the recovery of more than 260 rounds of live ammunition and two weapons allegedly meant for sale to a rebel outfit. A member of the pro-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was also arrested.

Nalbari district SP Abu Sufian said while 200 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition were recovered from the residence of havildar Kamini Barman,60 rounds of assorted ammunition were found in the possession of Lance Naik Gopal Choudhury, both posted in the district.

A third constable,Bhagaban Sarma, was picked up in the adjoining Baska district with the police recovering a .22 rifle and a .22 revolver from his possession.

“The three were in league to steal ammunition from the armouries in different police stations and had already entered into a kind of contract with an NDFB (P) member,D Balai alias Bipul Daimary,to supply them with such arms and ammunition,” SP Sufian told The Indian Express on Wednesday.

The SP also said preliminary interrogation had also brought to light the fact that arms and ammunition sourced by the three policemen were in fact destined to reach a group of militants belonging to the anti-talk faction of the NDFB.

“What we have found is that the NDFB (P) cadre is involved in sourcing arms and ammunition from the police and then selling them to the anti-talk faction,” SP Sufian said.
