Ten years after three Indian Army officers and a US national were accused of irregularities in the sale of coffins during the Kargil war,a city court on Wednesday acquitted them on the ground of insufficient evidence. The Army personnel deployed in the military attaché of the Indian Embassy in the US and the US national were accused of selling poor quality aluminium caskets at exorbitant prices.
The FIR against the military officers said they flouted norms of defence procurement to award the contract to US firm Buitron and Baiza Caskets and Funeral Supplies. The head of the firm,Victor Baiza,though charge sheeted,never appeared in court.
Investigation was handed over to CBI in June 2005 and charges of cheating,criminal conspiracy and corruption framed against the accused. The CBI alleged the military officers misused their position to cheat the exchequer.
