The ceiling of a female ward in Kasturba Hospital in Govindpura locality here collapsed on Friday leaving two persons dead and 14 injured.

At least 14 women were undergoing treatment on the first floor ward of the two-storeyed hospital building. Besides, there were a few attendants in the ward.

Late in the night, the Govindpura Police Station confirmed the deaths of Arun Sisodia,24,and Mohammed Jameel,70. However, the details of the deceased were not available with them. The injured have been admitted to the ICU of the same hospital.

Public Sector Undertaking Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited controls the hospital that began more than four decades ago mainly for the benefit of its employees and their relatives.

There were no patients on the ground floor ward because of the ongoing repair work. However, labourers were present on the ground floor when the ceiling collapsed late in the afternoon.

Most people escaped with minor injuries as the ceiling did not collapse completely and was slanted in most portions. The rescue operation was hampered by large number of anxious relatives who rushed to the hospital after they came to know of the incident. There was also confusion about the exact number of patients, their relatives and the labourers present in the hospital when the ceiling collapsed.
