2 contractors held for chopping off labourers’ palms

CM Naveen Patnaik Wednesday announced all the expenses for the treatment of the two will be borne out of CM’s Relief Fund.

The Orissa Police Wednesday arrested the labour contractors who had chopped off the palms of two bonded labourers of Jaypatna block in Kalahandi three days ago.

The labour contractor and his men had chopped off the right palms of Nilambar Dhangda Majhi,40, and Dialu Nial,22,Sunday night after they refused to go to the place where the contractors wanted him to go.

The two labourers and 10 others from Jaypatna block were taken to Chhattisgarh though they were being taken to Hyderabad. While 10 of the villagers managed to run away from the clutches of the labour contractors,Majhi and Niyal were tortured and their right palms chopped off. Police said the contractors had paid an advance of Rs 1.68 lakh to the 12 villagers including Majhi and Nial,and wanted Rs 2 lakh in return for “desertion” by the 10 villagers.

Police officials said the accused — Parwesh Rout and Bimal Rout — were arrested from neighbouring Nuapara and Nawarangpur district,while the hunt was on for others involved in the incident.

Meanwhile,the two labourers were shifted to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla from Kalahandi district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna after their condition became serious.
