Police in Mumbai were tracking the locations of four cellphones as they hunted for four men with criminal records after a teenage girl accused them of gangrape.
The 16-year-old went to Dindoshi police station in Goregaon East on Sunday saying she had been gangraped on Dhanteras (Friday) evening after being given a soft drink spiked with a drug. Two other men have been booked for abetting the crime.
At least three of the six accused are minors, police said. The oldest of the six is the father of a child, officers said.
The victim, who has told police that she fell unconscious during the assault, has blurry recollection of the incident. She continues to be in shock, and is being counseled by policewomen and members of an NGO,police said.
According to the girls complaint, one of the alleged rapists, whom she knew, rang her and asked her to meet him at Dindoshi so that he could give her a new mobile phone as a Diwali gift. She agreed, and he met her along with a friend, following which she accompanied the two accused to Dindoshi bridge.
The two both of whom are allegedly minors called up four others, who allegedly arrived with bottles of beer and a soft drink for the victim. The group stood drinking at a corner near Dindoshi bridge.
The girl has told the police that the soft drink gave her a severe headache. As everything around went into a blur, the accused forced her to gulp some beer as well, she has said.
According to the girls complaint,at least four of the accused then took turns to rape her, police officers said. The assault continued until at least 12.30 am,they said.
Police have named three of the accused as Wasim Watta,Surya and Asgar. Surya is 28 and Asgar is 24. At least one of the minors also raped the girl, police sources said.
Following the assault, the accused allegedly left her lying unconscious under the bridge and went to have dinner at a Goregaon restaurant. When she came to,the girl got up and somehow made her way home, police officers said. Her preliminary medical report shows she is badly bruised, they said.
The girl kept her story to herself until Sunday, when she broke down after her grandmother insisted on knowing why she seemed so quiet. Her brother then took her to the police, who took her to Bhagwati Hospital for a medical examination, the detailed reports of which are awaited.
Police said the girls father died two years ago, following which she dropped out of school. A few months later, her mother abandoned her. She had been staying with her brother and his wife in Goregaon for the last year and a half.
Once word of the crime was out in the area, the six accused allegedly fled their homes. All are history-sheeters. There are cases including those of theft, housebreaking and assault against each. They live in the same locality as the victim, the investigating officer from Dindoshi police station said.
The girl was sent for a medical test over 24 hours after the assault, but it will not affect the medical evidence. Apart from vaginal swabs, there are several other types of evidence including nail marks and abrasions caused during the struggle, Pravin Patil, deputy commissioner of police (Zone 12),said.
Police have sent the clothes the girl was wearing at the time for analysis. We are awaiting the reports, J B Mane, senior police inspector of Dindoshi police station, said. The police have registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
