At least 13 officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have been booked in the past 10 years in different cases of corruption but only two of them have been convicted.

Most of these cases were registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

While four of these officials have been acquitted so far, seven are facing trial. Among the officials booked, two were on deputation from the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) — while one of them was acquitted the other was awarded 18 months imprisonment by a CBI court.

According to the information provided by the NCB under the Right to Information (RTI) Act,five of the 13 employees were NCB staffers while others were working on deputation at the time they were booked. Those convicted have been identified as Ravikant Pawar, who was on deputation from RAW and working as Intelligence Officer (IO) when he was arrested on June 21,2006,and sepoy Paramjit Singh who was working at Chandigarh.

The accused employees who are facing trial according to the NCB include G C Chatterjee. Chatterjee was on deputation from the Central Excise to the NCB when he was arrested in December 2006. Before his arrest he was repatriated to his parent cadre just after registration of an FIR against him.

Another officer who is facing trial is Balwinder Kumar. He was on deputation from the SSB. Kumar was booked in March 14,2009 and was repatriated to his parent service in June 2011.

Interestingly, the response from the NCB has not mentioned Saji Mohan’s case who was arrested around three years back and is still in jail on various charges including that of corruption. Mohan is an IPS officer and was posted as Zonal Director at Chandigarh Zone of the NCB.
