Less than a month after the Maoist-police encounter in Malkangiri,at least 11 Maoists from the cut-off area, including a woman cadre, surrendered before the police there on Tuesday. Malkangiri SP Akhileshwar Singh said the Maoists — against whom charges of murder, loot and arson are pending — left their camps fearing they might be killed in a police encounter. “At least seven of them belonged to the cut-off area, which was the area most affected until a while ago. They were also fed-up will the ill treatment meted out by a cadre from Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh,” he said. Ten of the 11 surrendered Maoists were militia members while the only woman member was a member of cultural troupe ‘Jana Natya Dalam’.
