1.5 lakh people in 52 villages hit

A day after the Gandak breached the Saran embankment,about 52 villages of Gopalganj,Siwan and Chhapra have been partially submerged.

A day after the Gandak breached the Saran embankment,about 52 villages of Gopalganj,Siwan and Chhapra have been partially submerged. Over 1.5 lakh people living in these villages are reported to have been affected.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar,who conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas on Monday,said the state government had been taking adequate steps for relief and rescue operations. “It is not a Kosi-like situation. The administration has been monitoring the situation,” he said.

“We have started three mega camps on the lines of the Kosi flood relief along NH-28,” said Gopalganj District Magistrate Bala Murugam D. The national highway connecting Gopalganj and Muzaffarpur has been cut off. However,people of the affected areas,mostly from Barauli block of Gopalganj,are reluctant to leave their villages. Many of them have taken shelter in school buildings.

Director (Agriculture) B Rajinder,who has been made Special District Magistrate of Saran,said eight units of the National Disaster Response Force had been pressed into service for rescue operations. No casualty has been reported so far.
