CARDIFF: Australian captain Steve Waugh said here on Wednesday that the World Cup’s batsmen had not yet seen the back of him as a bowler.

Waugh, who began his career as an all-rounder but is now regarded more as a specialist number five batsman, said he expected to play a role with both bat and ball in the tournament.

“I had my eye on bowling in the World Cup about six months ago and I’ve been gradually building up in the nets and in games,” he said. He said: “Sunday was the sort of role I see myself playing — not bowling 10 overs, but maybe three or four; five or six if they’re coming out well.
