MADRID, MAY 20: Deportivo La Coruna won its first Spanish league title in its 94-year history defeating Espanyol 2-0 in the final round of the championship.

Founded in 1906, the team’s only trophy so far was the Spanish Cup in 1995.

After the game in La Coruna, Deportivo fans were singing and drinking wine, packing the streets in and around the Cuatro Caminos Fountain in the town centre.

Last year’s champion FC Barcelona, which reached a draw with Celta 2-2, finished No 2 in the 20-team division while Valencia, which defeated Zaragoza 2-1, ended at No 3. Both barcelona and Valencia teams earned a Champions Cup berth for the next season along with deportivo.

Other results: Mallorca 1, Atletico de Madrid 2; Real Madrid 0, Valladolid 1; and Athletic de Bilbao 2, Alaves 1.
