July 18: Shiv Sena’s Member of Parliament and mascot of the party’s North Indian base, Sanjay Nirupam, today met the Governor of Maharashtra and in a memorandum presented, stated that the state was being run much better than it was under the earlier Congress regime.

Referring to the constant refrain for dismissing the government, Nirupam had nothing new to say. He only reiterated that the number of desecrations in the regime of the present government was lesser than in the previous government.

“This government holds the dalits in high esteem, and even Muslims feel more secure and are happier in the regime of the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government,” read his memorandum.

Claiming that the desecration was a handiwork of the opposition, he said they had not asked for the imposition of Article 356 when the state was rocked by bombs in the wake of the riots in 1993, though they believed that there was a total failure of government machinery.

The delegation, led by the MP, was met by the Governor Dr P C Alexander, who accepted their memorandum.
