Shabana Azmi today confessed she had grown to like the noisy scenes in the Rajya Sabha. ‘‘At times, I would feel like getting up and screaming at the top of my voice,’’ said the actress, who completes her Rajya Sabha term on August 26.

The noise in the House initially intimidated her, she said: ‘‘I thought it was not my cup of tea.’’ But soon, she realised that ‘‘noises were all engineered and well thought-out strategies to push forward a point.’’

Shabana was the cynosure as Rajya Sabha members bid farewell to her and seven other nominated members — Kuldip Nayar, Kartar Singh Duggal, Dr Selvie Das, Dr Raja Ramanna, C. Narayana Reddy and Choudhary Harmohan Singh Yadav. DMK’s C.P. Thirunavukkarasu, who will retire on October 6, was also given a farewell.

Shabana said her regrets were that the Women’s Reservation Bill was not passed and that the National Population Policy was not debated in her presence. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj made specific references to each of the retiring members. They complained that the rules were loaded against them, as they never got chance to speak on issues.
