There is only one room with a balcony in the Rs 150-crore Swarnim Sankul Golden Jubilee Complex at Gandhinagar, marking 50 years of Gujarats formation. It belongs to the chief minister. Every time Narendra Modi stands there or even looks up from his desk inside,he can see a 42-metre-high mound,92-metre broad at its base, some distance away.

The mound is Modis tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, meant to represent a salt heap at Dandi beach, where the Mahatma ended his march against the British salt law. This connect of the mound at Mahatma Mandir with his office was part of Modis own plan. What was a symbolic gesture of the common man fighting the British might is,in its ambition and scale, however, more representative of the man who rules Gujarat now.
