Kailash Jhakad,an accused in the Bhanwari Devi case, escaped from custody on Thursday morning while leaving a local court in Jodhpur. The Jodhpur police said members of Jhakads gang, waiting outside the sessions court, opened fire on Jhakads police escort as he was being led outside. They took off with him in a vehicle.
Another prime suspect in the same case Bishnaram Bishnoi, who was with Jhakad, also attempted to escape but was nabbed by his police escort immediately. The police also caught two members of the gang that carried out the escape. After grilling them, cops say they have sufficient information on where Jhakad has been taken and by whom.
The Jodhpur police have set up roadblocks and checkpoints on all roads leading out of Jodhpur in an effort to apprehend Jhakad. Incidentally, the duo was in court not for a hearing in the Bhanwari Devi case, but for a land-grabbing charge.
Jodhpur police commissioner Bhupendra Dak told ‘The Indian Express’ that the operation was pre-planned. Members of Bishnoi and Jhakads gang waited in two SUVs outside the sessions court and opened fire on their police escort, injuring a shopkeeper. Though the police retaliated,Jhakad managed to get into the vehicle and flee, while Bishnoi was nabbed immediately. A search operation was initiated immediately, Dak said.
Senior police officials said Bishnois gang probably used country-made weapons to attack the jail escort, which included five constables and a commando. Sources also said neither prisoner was handcuffed as they were yet to be sentenced. A senior police official on grounds of anonymity said,We believe we have identified who planned the escape and efforts are on to trace both the escaped prisoner and the gang members involved.
Bishnoi is the leader of a gang in Jodhpur is suspected to have disposed of Devis body early in September after she was kidnapped allegedly on arrested Rajasthan minister Mahipal Madernas orders.
