SURAT, July 25: Acting swiftly, the police on Sunday arrested an alleged quack who three days ago gave an injection to a two-year-old boy, which resulted in the child’s death on Sunday morning. The victim died in the New Civil Hospital, a few hours before being admitted there, after the injection caused a septic wound in his hip.

According to information, the victim, Hari Prasad Yadav, was given an injection by Dr Pankaj Kumar, presently residing at Sanjaynagar slum, on July 22. But Hari developed a high fever immediately after being injected the medicine.

Hari then suddenly lost consciousness on Saturday night and his parents rushed him to the New Civil Hospital, where he died at 3.30 am on Sunday, with pus formed in his hips.

Even as the father Radheshyam Jawaharlal Yadav, a mill worker and resident of Sanjaynagar slum of Udhna Road no 3, told the police that his son died because of pus formation in the area where the injection was given, the police raided the Kumar’s house and arrested him before he could escape.

Police investigations later revealed that Kumar did not have any medical degree or valid certificate that allowed him to practice as a doctor.

The Udhna police have registered a case under sections 326 and 419 of the IPC and sections 33 and 35 of the Gujarat Medical Practitioners Act 1963. PSI B M Rawat is investigating further.

Incidentally, less than a fortnight ago, the Udhna police raided the dispensaries of five quacks operating in Azadnagar and Sanjaynagar slums of Udhna area and booked them for illegally running dispensaries without any certificates.
