An unidentified caller sent the police into a tizzy on Tuesday. The caller said ‘‘Anti Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare will be killed in a bomb blast within the two three days’’. The police identified that the call had originated from a PCO in Sahakarnagar area.
Joint police commissioner Rajendra Sonawane said, “The police control room received a call this evening from an unidentified number. A person who was speaking in Marathi threatened that there would be a bomb blast at Karkare’s house within two or three days.” After which police officials working in the control room informed all concerned officers. The city crime branch then started investigating from where the number had originated. The call was traced to a PCO near Sarang Society bus stop which had a telephone number 24231375.’’
‘‘The police quizzed the PCO owner. But the person working at the PCO said that since the call was made at a time when there is a heavy rush at his shop, he would not be able to tell the name of the caller,’’ he added.
‘‘We are taking the call very seriously. We would study all the aspects of the case and would be deciding on the further course of action,” he said. Though Karakre does not stay at Sahakarnagar, he visits his relatives in the city on some occasions, police said.
