Manchester United players are not even among the top 10 payers on the planet,in spite of them closing in on a 19th Premier League title.
The Old Trafford outfit is placed at a lowly 16th in the rankings of sports teams across the globe in terms of average wages per player.
Figures released by ESPN Magazine also reveal Alex Ferguson’s squad is only the third most expensive in the country,with their squad averaging 60,000 per week.
According to The Sun,that figure is dwarfed by both Chelsea and rivals Manchester City,whose players average 70,700 pounds and 69,000 pounds a week to sit sixth and 10th in the overall charts respectively.
The figures,which run until the end of the 2009-10 season,incredibly see Portsmouth and West Ham in the top 100 positions.
The big three American sports of baseball,basketball and American football dominate the listings but the two highest-paying sports teams can both be found in La Liga Barcelona and Real Madrid with average weekly wages of 93,000 pounds and 86,000 pounds respectively.
ESPN also named the top-paid sportstars in every country,with Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao and American baseball’s Alex Rodriguez taking home 19.5 million last year.
England’s top sportsstar in terms of wages is Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton,while Manchester United trio Ryan Giggs,Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea make up the leading Welsh,Scottish and Irish earners.
