A Titus Bramble own goal helped Manchester United edge closer to their 20th league title when they won 1-0 at Sunderland on Saturday to stay 15 points clear of champions Manchester City with only eight Premier League games left to play. City, whose manager Roberto Mancini conceded the title race was over on Thursday, beat Newcastle United 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium with goals from Carlos Tevez,David Silva,Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure after they started the match 18 points behind United who kicked off earlier in the day. United have 77 points from their 30 matches, with City in second on 62. The race for the other two Champions League places hotted up with Tottenham Hotspur winning 2-1 at Swansea City to leapfrog Chelsea into third place after they lost 2-1 at Southampton. Spurs have 57 points, two ahead of Chelsea on 55 with Arsenal, who beat Reading 4-1,on 53.

Dortmund delay Bayern party

In Germany,Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski scored eight minutes from time to give champions Borussia Dortmund a nervous 2-1 win at 10-man VfB Stuttgart on Saturday and delay the all but inevitable Bayern Munich title party by at least a week. Lewandowski snatched his 20th goal of the season after a cutback into the box by fellow Poland international Lukasz Piszczek. Failure to win at Stuttgart would have given Bayern the chance to clinch the title later on Saturday with a home win over Hamburg SV but second-placed Dortmund’s victory put them 17 points behind the Bavarians.

Juve beat Inter

In Italy,Juventus edged closer to a second successive Serie A title after winning 2-1 in a pulsating “derby of Italy” at old rivals Inter Milan on Saturday. A superb long range Fabio Quagliarella strike after three minutes and a tap in from Alessandro Matri on the hour were just enough to beat a determined Inter, who briefly levelled the scores on 54 minutes through Rodrigo Palacio. The win puts the champions on 68 points with eight games left,12 points clear of second-placed Napoli, who travel to Torino in Saturday’s late game.

Second-from-bottom Palermo were the big winners after Josip Ilicic and Fabrizio Miccoli did the damage in their 2-0 home win against AS Roma.

Barca held,Malaga win

In Spain,Barcelona conceded a late equalizer to slip to a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo Saturday,as the Spanish leaders stumbled before their Champions League quarterfinal with Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona appeared to have secured the win when Lionel Messi added to his earlier assist to Cristian Tello by scoring in the 73rd minute to extend his record Spanish league scoring run to 19 straight games. With the goal against Vigo,Messi has now netted against every other team in the league during the run.

In another match,Chile midfielder Pedro Morales scored one and set up two more as Malaga ran out 3-1 winners at Rayo Vallecano.
