Seventeen-year-old Thulasi PC’s family moved from Palaghat to Trichur to find her a badminton training centre. On Sunday in Indore, she was being spotted around the senior nationals venue hall. The Kerala girl brought off the big upset of the tournament with a straight-set victory over top seed Neha Pandit. Thulasi won 22-20 21-19 to put Maharashtra’s Pandit out in the third round, and set up a meeting with Truti Lavania, who sent out another seeded player, beating Assam’s 15th seed Bibari Basumatari. “I only concentrated on keeping the shuttle in play. I think Neha was under some pressure, being the top seed,” Thulasi said.

The men’s top seed had a slightly tough time too,but Aravind Bhat never lost control of his third round match against Aditya Prakash. Going neck-and-neck till 10-10,Prakash’s jump smashes took him 14-11 in lead, before Bhat put his foot on the pedal and took six straight points to get to game point. Prakash refused to give up even, getting to 18-20 before Bhat finished the game. In the second game,Prakash began making a lot more errors, and that finished 21-13. Second seed Anup Sridhar beat Punjab’s Raj Kumar 21-8 21-15.
