Yuki not in squad,Paes returns
Yuki Bhambri was left out of the Davis Cup team announced on Thursday for the World Group tie against Russia,while Leander Paes made a return to the side. Somdev Devvarman,Rohan Bopanna and reserve player Sanam Singh were the others named in the team for the March 5-7 tie.
Yuki,unlikely to make it to the top four of the squad to play against the Russians,has opted to play in ATP events in the US to improve his ranking.
Chikka to meet Bhanu in final
Sixteen-year-old Chikkarangappa defeated Sri Lankas K Prabhagaran to set up a title clash against unheralded Bhanupratap Singh in the matchplay championship at the LG All-India Amateur golf tournament in Pune. While Chikka beat Prabhagaran 3&1,Bhanu continued his march over higher-ranked players,as he upset the experienced Karan Vasudeva 2&1 to make it to the final.
Sutil seventh fastest
Adrian Sutil clocked the seventh fastest time in a rain-truncated session as inclement weather disrupted Force Indias testing at the Circuit de Jerez in Spain. The first day of Force Indias four-day programme saw new test and reserve driver Paul di Resta getting his first taste of the VJM03 in the morning before Sutil took over for the afternoons running. Sutil could complete just 28 laps and his best of 1:24.272 put him seventh on the 12-driver timesheet led by Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel (1:22.593).
Dubai match unlikely
The Indian football team is likely to play only one friendly match during their 20-day training in Dubai against a local side as the proposed second game may not be held as clubs there are busy with the UAE league.
India had planned two friendly matches against local sides in Dubai as they begin their preparations for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup but they will now have to play only one. They will play against Al Shahab on February 20.
Boxing federation sign sponsor
The Indian Boxing federation signed Percept as their exclusive marketing partner for a stint of four years the upcoming Commonwealth games 2010. Colonel PK Muralidharan Raja,secretary general of the federation,also said,Entering into a relationship with Percept will open up many avenues for boxing. Now we can also excel in various fields and be able to provide a complete package to our players.
Kenyan athlete killed in accident
Former Kenyan middle-distance runner David Lelei has been killed in a car accident in which compatriot and former 10,000 metres world champion Moses Tanui suffered chest injuries. According to former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat,Lelei,39 and Tanui,45,were driving from Nairobi to their homes in Eldoret on Wednesday when they hit an oncoming lorry a few kilometres outside Nakuru.
