Soniya,Ravi get Olympic berths

Weightlifters Ravi Kumar and Ng Soniya Chanu will be representing India at the London Games

Weightlifters Ravi Kumar and Ng Soniya Chanu will be representing India at the London Games. This was decided after a two hour long Indian Weightlifting Federation’s selection committee meeting at New Delhi on Wednesday.

Speaking about the two seasoned lifters’ chances at the Summer Games,WFI secretary general Sahdev Yadav said that Chanu could finish in the medal bracket. “In case she improves her lift by 4 or 5 kgs,there is a bright chance of her standing on the podium. As for Ravi,he is recovering well after injury. He is a talented weightlifter and the best we have.”

Chanu,who had won a silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2010,bagged a bronze in the 48 kg category to open India’s medal account at the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships at South Korea recently. Hailing from Manipur,she is employed by Uttar Pradesh Police and is a product of SAI Centre of Excellence,Lucknow.
