Rimil Biruily is probably in her best shooting form these days. On Friday, the 22-year-old provided an early indicator that she could prove a tough opponent even to archery’s girl wonder Deepika Kumari by pipping the World No. 3 to first place in the qualification rounds of the recurve event in the National Ranking Tournament.

Having gotten past Kontu Jyothi,Satbir Kaur and Bombayla Devi in the first of the 70m events,Biruily faced Deepika again on Saturday morning. Deepika, however, proved too good and romped to a 6-0 victory.

In the evening session, however,Biruily turned the tables on Deepika. Deepika initially held the upper hand, bagging the first end to lead 2-0. But after taking the second,Biruily inched ahead from the third before bagging the final with a 6-4 margin. The bronze medal match saw a similar reversal of fortunes. Bombayla had beaten Dola Banerjee 6-0 during the morning session; now,Banerjee triumphed 7-3.

“It wasn’t that my form dipped. I’m generally happy with my shooting. I slipped in the morning session as I was having trouble adjusting to the wind,” Biruily said, explaining her one-sided defeat in the morning’s final. “But dips in form are part of the game,” she added.

mixed luck

In the men’s section,Tarundeep Rai got to both finals, beating Atanu Das 7-1 in the morning and losing 6-4 to Priyank in the evening,to finish with wins in two out of his four events and virtually assuring himself of a place in the Indian squad. Priyank had earlier pipped Jayanta Talukdar in the morning’s bronze medal match. Talukdar took the bronze in the evening.
