Quick singles – Day 5: Rahane strikes patient chord on hostile day

Rahane brought up his 2nd 50 on the trot and announced his arrival in the world of Test cricket.

India were under pressure after losing two wickets early on Day 5 of the second Test. Virat Kohli could not add to his overnight score of 11 and was dismissed on the first ball of the last day. Dale Steyn further pushed India back when he castled Cheteshwar Pujara for 32.

The post-lunch session began with the sun shining in it’s full glory over the Kingsmead. Bright sunshine made it even worse for India as they had to bat out of their skins to save the match. India’s batting collapsed in the second innings and the hosts went in to lunch with a minimal lead of 7 runs, and only three wickets in the bag, plus there was no Ashwin to save them today.

‘I scored more than you’

Ideally,Indian fans expected Rohit Sharma’s bat to do the talking and save the match,if not win. Instead,Sharma engaged in a string of heated arguments with Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

Apparently,Steyn bragged about scoring more runs in the series than Sharma and the right-handed batsman gave it back to the fast bowlers then and there. Eventually, the umpires had to intervene.

After being cleaned up by Steyn in the first innings of this Test, the 26-year-old could not make the opportunity count in the second, and final innings of the tour. The South African speedster had the last laugh as Rohit was trapped by Vernon Philander for 25,19 short of Steyn’s first innings score of 44.

The patient find

Ajinkya Rahane brought up his second fifty on the trot and announced his arrival in the world of Test cricket. In a scenario where players fight out competition for every spot,it takes a Herculean effort to make your presence felt. Rahane rose to the occasion when it was required the most and delivered.

After scoring his maiden Test fifty in first innings of the Durban Test,Rahane continued his splendid form in the second innings with another fifty. After the batting collapse,Rahane held fort for the visitors. The patient right-hander had added more than hundred runs without being dismissed in the match.
