When ‘God of Cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar took to the Pune pitch on Maharashtra Day on Tuesday,Puneites were left spellbound. He came, spoke and bowled everyone over…that was the common refrain among the crowd, mostly young, that packed the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch where the masterblaster was honoured by Pune Mayor Vaishali Bankar on behalf of Puneites.

“It’s an experience to cherish for a lifetime…He is great on field and terrific off it. It indeed was a divine spell,” said Pratap Valekar who had come from Pimpri-Chinchwad to hear Sachin speak.

Anchorperson Sunandan Lele,a cricket expert, bowled one googly after another at Sachin who was equal to the task. He was at his eloquent best and spoke without faltering even once. He did not refuse to comment on any question.

Even on the much-debated question of his Rajya Sabha nomination,Sachin drove with a straight bat, which went down well with the crowd.

He unleashed his pearls of wisdom and the young crowd applauded. Asked how he handled pressure,Sachin advised youngsters to live in the present. “When I am batting,I think about that particular moment. There is a split second to take a decision. At that particular moment,I do not think about the previous match or matches where I might have faltered. It is important to live in the present…pressure will disappear on its own.”

Asked how he handled success and failure,he said,“Mind training has come to me from my family. When I used to play school and club cricket, there was an unwritten rule to not discuss performance and to get ready for the next match. It was a simple formula. Whatever has happened cannot be changed,be it success or failure. The only celebration at home if I did well was an offering of sweets to God by my mother.”

He said,“Sometimes, success is waiting round the corner and one should always think of taking that extra step to achieve it.”

About his charities,he said,“I have been supporting deprived children by sponsoring their education through ‘Apanalaya Centre’ for many years. But this is for my personal satisfaction and I do not need any publicity.”

Reliving the celebrations after winning the World Cup last year,he said,“My driver told me fans were dancing on my car outside. I told him not to stop them, and not to worry about dents. The Cup had brought the whole country together and it was the greatest day of my life.”

Sachin advised youngsters to never forget the “sweat and toil” of their parents in their upbringing. “I don’t think there is anybody who has disrespect for his or her parents.”

Praising his wife Anjali,Sachin said it was important to get an ideal partner in life. “I thank the almighty for giving me a wife like Anjali.”

At the function organised by Amit Enterprises Pvt Ltd,at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch. MPs Supriya Sule and Vandana Chavan, Amit Enterprises CMD Kishore Pate and Rohal Pate were among those present.

Before winding up,Sachin appealed to people to experience the “joy of giving” as even small things contributed to the needy could prove precious to many unfortunate individuals.
