Young techies from Australian universities whose innovations such as a sensing imager that can ‘see’ through walls and can be useful in surveillance and rescue missions have been awarded by Indian IT industry body Nasscom.
Other innovative ideas that were recognised could help people reduce electricity bills and provide better logistics solutions to NGOs.
The Inaugural Nasscom Student Innovation Award for this year were given by the visiting Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot at a function last night in Sydney.
The award ceremony was a part of the ongoing 3-day mega business event CeBIT 2012 in Sydney’s Darling Harbour. India was a partner country for the CeBIT event.
Students from the Universities of Sydney,Western Sydney,New South Wales and Wollongong won the Nasscom awards. There were 12 finalists from six Universities in the two categories
IT Innovation and IT-enabled Business Innovation.Techies from Wollongong University developed compressed Sensing Imager that can see through walls and opaque structures and can be used in surveillance and rescue missions.
Two young techies from NSW university – Brad Lorge and Aimee Lowth – also received the award for innovating ‘Confufish’ that can provide a ‘lite’ logistics solution for NGO’s.
The Sydney University students were honoured for their project MyPower Energy Management Platform that can offer a technically and economically feasible solution which can contribute to a 10 per cent reduction in the electricity consumption in homes.
A Western Sydney University student Avtar Singh Gill was also among the awardees for his project called ‘STEP ON IT PROGRAMTM’.
It can provide users with a mobile active lifestyle programme that builds on an existing body composition analyser and clinical data acquisition unit SK-X80 with means to assess rapid personal body measurements at home small personal scales UWB enabled and worksites. Pilot,meanwhile,stressed upon the need of innovation in India and Australia to address the myriad challenges of new century.
Nasscom Australia Chairman Anu Agrawal said,”We are privileged to recognise the high level of innovation from students of Australia’s universities,which are and ought to be breeding ground of innovation in any country.
“The content and quality of the presentations to our judges was excellent and demonstrated many fine examples of originality.”
