Aiming to inspire the next generation and fuel their Olympic dreams, ace rifle shooter Gagan Narang plans to take his London 2012 bronze medal on a countrywide tour. “I want my medal to travel across the country so that it inspires the next generation,” said Narang on the sidelines of a felicitation function organised by the sports ministry.

Narang revealed that it was while coming back from the Royal Artillery Barracks — the venue of the shooting competitions — to the Games Village after his moment of glory that the idea flashed across his mind. “I saw the London Games’ motto — Inspire A Generation — and that’s when I thought about it,” the 29-year-old shooter from Hyderabad said.

Reflecting on his own journey,an emotional Narang recollected how, years ago,his parents had to sell off a plot of land to buy the young shooter a rifle and keep his dream alive. “After that step,we had to stay in a rented house for the next 15 years.”

The sacrifice bore fruits as Narang went on to win medals after medals at home and abroad. However,he had to wait for the latest triumph, and perhaps the most important one.

“I feel complete,” said Narang. “The love and affection of the people,it’s a humbling experience. It’s a good feeling to be able to bring smiles on the faces of people.

“When kids come to me and say that they want to be like me,and older people come and hug me and say they are proud of me,it feels the tears and hard work was worth it.”
