If everything goes to plan,Cameroonian soccer legend Roger Milla could grace the opening ceremony of the Nehru Cup. Title sponsor ONGC,who plan to invite a host of people to promote the tournament, have him at the top of their list. The oganisers will also request President Pratibha Patil,Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit to lend support to the tournament. They will also approach Indian cricketers to promote the event.
Milla set the 1990 World Cup on fire with his performance against Diego Maradonas Argentina. After the World Cup,he came to Kolkata to play an exhibition match against Mohun Bagan. He is still considered an emissary of African football.
It is,however, not yet decided if the tournament will be held as per the original schedule. Initially,it was decided that the Nehru Cup would be played from August 18 to 30 with Syria,Lebanon,Thailand,Kyrgyzstan,Sri Lanka and hosts India participating. But the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is reportedly mulling over deferring the tournament by a day. The AIFF meeting on August 6 is expected to finalise the schedule.
