Unhappy over his 4 month suspension from the House of Lords over parliamentary expenses claim,Lord Swraj Paul today resigned from the position as its Deputy Speaker.
Lord Paul,79,along with two peers of Asian origin – Baroness Monzila Pola Uddin and Lord Amirali Alibhai Bhatia – had been suspended last month for varying periods over their claim of accommodation allowance given to MPs who reside outside London.
Lord Paul had shown his residence outside London and claimed allowances to the tune of about 40,000 in 2005 and 2006 which he later returned.
Britain’s House of Lords on October 21 had endorsed the recommendation of its Privileges Committee and suspended the three members for varying periods.
The NRI industrialist had said that the rules for such allowances had been clarified and modified only in July this year. He expressed the view that the Committee cannot apply “perspective and standards” of 2010 to the rules operating in 2005.
