Lebanon bans two films

In a blow to its reputation as a bastion of tolerance in a deeply conservative region,Lebanon has banned the screening of a film about homosexuality (Stranger by the Lake from French director Alain Guiraudie) and another on short-term “pleasure marriages” practised in some Muslim communities (I Offered You Pleasure from director Farah Shaer). The films, which were due to be shown at the Beirut International Film Festival last week, were blocked by a government censorship committee, festival organisers said. The decision was attributed to “obscene scenes of kissing between gay men, philandering, naked men and sexual intercourse between men” in one film and “sex scenes that offend public opinion and obscene language” in the other.Reuters

The anatomy of a show

She recently celebrated her 200th episode playing Dr Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, when the 10th season began airing last month. Now Ellen Pompeo has opened up about her former co-stars Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, who both exited the ABC series amidst controversy. Pompeo revealed that she did not want Isaiah Washington’s Dr Preston Burke to play her on-screen love interest,as the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes wanted, because she felt the mixed race storyline was similar to her real life. Speaking about Katherine Heigl, who scored an Emmy as Dr Izzie Stevens,Pompeo said her exit from the show was tough, but she understood it as Heigl had been offered $12 million for a film. PTI
