Anil Kumble is still revered by both team mates and opponents alike as a model of professionalism.
Ask Dinesh Karthik, who became only the sixth batsman to score hundreds in each innings of a Duleep Trophy encounter on Saturday, about his infamous trip to Sri Lanka, and he reveals that what bothered him the most was not the streak of failures, but that he let his former captain down.
Anil bhai personally approached me before the tour and told me that this was the perfect opportunity to establish myself in the side. And Im still smarting from the fact that I betrayed his confidence, says the Tamil Nadu skipper.
After smashing his way to a breathtaking 153 in the first innings at the Chinnaswamy stadium,Karthik played a comparatively sedate knock second time around, adding his name to an illustrious list, which includes the names of Bhaskar Pillay,Yuvraj Singh,Aakash Chopra,Wasim Jaffer and Kevin Pietersen.
It was also the first time I was achieving that feat in my first-class career, which was special. And doing it against a very decent attack on a difficult pitch was very satisfying, says Karthik.
