Former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has strengthened his golf links. From being an ever-improving sub-par amateur,Kapil now is the team owner in the sport’s newly launched city-based IPL-kind of contest. Kapil has a stake in the Dev-Ellora Chandigarh team that has signed up two-time Asian Tour winner Gaganjeet Bhullar as its marquee player.

Despite being a course regular,Kapil plans to stay away from the players and the team plans during the March 5 to 10 tournament at KGA,Bangalore. “I’m a weekend golfer, not even in my dreams can I imagine playing like these professionals do. What guidance can I give them as the team owner. I’ve just always told sportsmen to fight hard, play hard. They are sensible enough. Of course our team will set up a whole management that will look into all issues, and closer to the event,I’ll sit with the players for some chit-chat,” Kapil said.

After joining hands with the league,Kapil claims the transition from cricket to golf hasn’t been tough “Everything’s going smooth from day one,” he says, adding: “just signing the cheques is the tough part.”

The ten teams along with the event sponsor have pooled in $1 million (Rs 5 crores) out of which Rs1.34 crores is earmarked for prize money.

When reminded about his forgettable association with the Indian Cricket League,Kapil said that setbacks don’t bother him. “You don’t hit a jackpot all at once, you try several things and you succeed at some so basically the idea is to keep trying. That’s what I’m doing. My ambition is to get other sports to as big sporting high as cricket in India,” he says.

Kapil also happens to be face of the tournament and is keen to promote golf around the country.
