It was a smooth sail for the Chennai Super Kings as they outclassed Kings XI Punjab in all the departments of the game and sealed the fixture without losing any wicket. After restricting them to a small total,CSK approached the run-chase with great perfection and ensured not to suffer any casualty in the process.
Michael Hussey (86 not out) looked in sublime touch as the elegant southpaw impressed all with his strokeplay on both sides of the wicket. His back-to-back boundaries off Parvinder Awanas bowling were a treat to watch. The way he bisected the field was similar to a surgeon operating with a knife in his hand.
Mr. Cricket,as he is popularly known as,didn’t waste any scoring opportunities and gave the right treatment to the deliveries in his zone.
Murali Vijay (50 not out),on the other hand, played an able assisting role as the right-hander didn’t do anything silly and ran brilliantly between the wickets.
The KXIP bowlers didn’t bowl to a plan and were wayward with their line and lengths. Too much width on offer made life easier for the Chennai duo, which wasted no opportunity on offer.
Adam Gilchrist did all he could in rotating the bowlers, trying different field placements but his efforts went in vain as the Chennai openers played a brilliant innings.
Earlier, after put into bat,Kings XI Punjab didn’t get going as the Chennai seamers used the early assistance to full effect.
Seamer Dirk Nannes,in particular, was right on the money. Both Mandeep Singh and Adam Gilchrist were removed early by the quick.
Struggling at 20/2,the home side needed someone to commence the repair job. That didn’t happen as last match hero Manan Vohra was not able to capitalise on the start he got.
The hosts were in a spot of bother when David Hussey used his cricketing brain to put together a handy stand with Gurkeerat Singh.
It was always difficult to tackle this crafty bowling attack as all of them have a special trick up their sleeve. Dwayne Bravo’s cutters,R Ashwin’s carrom ball and Ravindra Jadeja’s subtle variation form a brilliant trio.
The skipper was rotating his bowlers well as runs weren’t flowing the way home side would have wanted.
Bravo rattled the lower middle order to push them further back. Chris Morris, playing his first match of the IPL,operated as a street- smart customer and picked up two to help CSK bowl out the KXIP for an average 138.
