For P K Muhammed,a native of Benur near Kasargode, the tragedy struck during breakfast. “I was watching TV. The breaking news said the Dubai-Mangalore flight had crashed and almost all on aboard were feared dead. I had lost hope for my son Abdul Hakeem,” says Muhammed, fighting back tears.

Muhammed and his family were waiting for their only son Hakeem,29,who runs a medical store in Dubai along with two partners to come home to enroll his elder daughter in the local school next week. Besides,he wanted to spend some time with his wife who is expecting their third child.

Hakeem, working in Dubai for the last three years, had come home four months back to care for his sick parents. “He was very much concerned about  our health,” said Muhammed,a small-time farmer. “Yesterday evening also he talked to me. When I insisted that I would send his cousins to the airport to receive him,he objected. He said he would come alone as usual. Now look, what has happened,” says Muhammed, hugging his five-year-old granddaughter Fathima Ayisha, still oblivious of her father’s death. Hakeem’s body was identified in the morning itself.

Kambathil House,on the outskirts of Kasargode, had a different story to tell. Preperations to receive guests for the family youngest daughter’s marriage had begun days back. By Friday evening,a huge shamiana was in place at the courtyard. A truckload of chairs and tables have been brought in for the guests. But the family members who turned up for Rahiyana’s marriage suddenly became mourners,as her 29-year-old brother Anvar Sadique,an accountant with a private firm in Dubai, was among those killed in the crash.

Sadique’s father Abdulla said his son had helped him mobilise money to marry off  the daughter. “He had come last month also to attend the marriage of a close relative,” said Abdulla, looking at the shamiana, which would now receive the body of his son.

According to neighbours, many of the relatives had come to know about the tragedy only after reaching their home. Now,the chairs have to be arranged by evening, but for a different purpose.

However,Sadique’s cousin Aboobacker was lucky as his ticket to the Mangalore flight was not confirmed. Both Sadique and Aboobacker had gone to the Dubai airport to take the ill-fated Mangalore flight, but only the former was destiny to board the ill-fated flight. Aboobacker took a flight to Kozhikode airport.
