Australian great Greg Chappell is being considered by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) to coach its senior side. Others big names on the short list include former West Indies batsman Alvin Kallicharan and one-time Zimbabwe coach Allan Butcher.

“There are lots of names that are being discussed right now. However, there has been no decision yet. A meeting will be held at the end of the week and that’s when the decision will be taken,” said a MCA insider.

He also went on to reveal that the association has received close to 30 applications.

In addition to these illustrious names,Monty Desai, the Rajasthan Royals coach, has also thrown his hat in the ring. Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar had also reportedly sent in an application but later withdrew from the race.

According to MCA sources,a couple of former Australian first-class cricketers turned coaches are also interested in the job.

Maharashtra have already had three foreign coaches over the last decade. Darren Holder,Shaun Williams and Dermot Reeve have served as head coaches of the team. Reeve was relieved of his duties during the course of the 2012-13 season and former national selector Surendra Bhave had been named head coach of the side which finished last in group B of the Ranji Trophy last season.
