Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan on Friday insisted that he had,in fact, discussed the the multiple-captain theory that has created quite a stir ahead of the Indian Premier League, with Sourav Ganguly before they held a joint press conference on Wednesday.

Ganguly had said after that interaction that he had heard about the plans from the media and no one from the team management had mentioned it before.

Buchanan refuted those claims. “I had discussed in detail with Sourav about his future role in the team after the last IPL season. At least I can say we had discussed the necessity of creating new leadership. It was not new to him,” Buchanan was quoted as saying by a Bengali daily. He asserted that he had franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan’s support in this regard. “Shah Rukh has given me complete freedom.”

Meanwhile, the KKR team members appeared to be sceptical on the four-captain theory. Bengal batsman Arindam Ghosh,a new inductee, was forthright in his comments as he said: “We are a tad confused. I don’t know how the idea will work. We are more accustomed to the traditional system.”

His Bengal Ranji team captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla, described as one of the leadership options by Buchanan, however, chose to side-step the question. “Our main target is to play better cricket this year. Last year,we were inconsistent. This time we want to make amends. It’s up to the team management to formulate strategies. They will do whatever they think will be the best for the team, because everybody wants the team to do well,” Shukla stated.
