The photographers shifting their base to the back of Mumbai FCs goal-post at the break summed up the story of Dempo SCs easy 3-1 victory in their I-League match at the Cooperage ground on Saturday.
The Goan side dominated the game for most part and never looked in trouble. The new-look Mumbai FCs lack of experience was exposed as they appeared clueless in front of the Dempo attack well executed by their pair of Ranti Martins and international Sunil Chhetri, who kept troubling the home side throughout the match. Mumbai FC allowed the Dempo midfield to dictate the proceedings at will.
We had not got a chance to play a competitive match for a long time and our lack of experience was evident, admitted Henry Picardo, the manager of Mumbai FC.
After a slow start, the Dempo strikers started finding ways to penetrate Mumbai FCs defence. Ranti capitalised from one such defensive lapse to provide a close-range chance to Roberto DSilva, who made no mistake in slotting home in the 21st minute. Just four minutes later,Chhetri tapped in an excellent pass from the left from Ranti. Then, just six minutes after play resumed after the break,Climax Lawrence put a pass near the goal post from Chhetri in for the third.
Peter Siddiqui pulled one back in the78th minute when he headed in from a Nishant Mehra corner.
In Pune, debutants Pune FC held East Bengal to a 0-0 draw. An off-colour Bhaichung Bhutia picked up an early booking. In Goa,the match between Salgaocar and Viva Kerala was postponed due to rain.
