Deccan Chargers relied on a late batting assault by Dwayne Smith (47) and Rohit Sharma’s three-wicket dream spell later on to thump Rajasthan Royals by 53 runs in their Indian Premier League match.
Electing to bat,Deccan first rattled up a challenging 166 for seven, relying mainly on Dwayne Smith’s (47) late charge and later Rohit took three wickets for 12 runs to bundle out Rajasthan for 113 in 19.3 overs Rohit returned with figures of 3-0-12-3,after Chaminda Vaas had rocked Rajasthan run chase with two early wickets at the De Beers Diamond Oval. RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha chipped in with a wicket apiece.
With the win, their sixth from 10 matches,Deccan jumped to third spot in the points table with 12 points pushing down Rajasthan to fourth (11 points from 11 matches).
Chasing a difficult 167 for a win,Rajasthan were outplayed in all departments of the game by Deccan. They withered against a disciplined Deccan bowling with none of their batsmen, except for Swapnil Asnodkar (44),contributing much.
By the 10th over, they were in trouble at 59 for three and virtually ended the run chase by the 15th over when they reached 96 for six.
Rajasthan began their run chase in the worst possible fashion with their two top order batsmen returning to the hut inside the fourth over.
Graeme Smith (1) was hit by Chaminda Vaas’ first delivery of the innings high on the pads above knee roll but the umpire raised his dreaded finger to the dismay of Rajasthan camp.
Vaas, who was playing his first match of this IPL,then dismissed Lee Carseldine (8),stumped by Adam Gilchrist to reduce Rajasthan to 19 for two.
Deccan tightened the screw after strategy break and Naman Ojha (16) was run out from a remarkable piece of fielding by Ravi Teja whose direct throw from backward point dislodged the bail in the eighth over.
Needing more than 10 an over after the halfway mark,Rajasthan tried to accelerate the innings and in the process Yusuf Pathan (6) was out in the 12th over.
Yusuf holed out to Dwayne Smith off Pragyan Ojha, which dealt a big blow to Rajasthan run chase which was compounded by another run out this time of Swapnil Asnodkar following a terrible mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja (19 not out).
A clean up of Abhishek Raut’s (1) timbers by Rohit Sharma saw the run rate shooting up to over 15 an over by the 16th over and Morne Morkel (8),Shane Warne (0),Siddarth Trivedi (1) and Munaf Patel (4) ended up trying to do the impossible.
Earlier,Deccan struggled to score against a disciplined Rajasthan bowling attack, losing wickets at regular intervals before Dwayne Smith lifted them to 166 for seven with a 32-ball 47 which had four sixes in it.
Rajasthan bowlers did not allow Deccan batsmen to settle down for any substantial partnership before the Smith heroics.
Yusuf Pathan was the most successful Rajasthan bowler with 3/34 from his four overs while Ravindra Jadeja bowled beautifully to chip in two wickets for 26 runs.
Smith, who came to the crease in the 10th over after the departure of Rohit Sharma (9),was quite initially but opened up towards the end of the innings, taking his side from 108 in the 15th over to 166 for seven before he was out to Yusuf Pathan in the last over.
He shared a 29-ball 37 with Chaminda Vaas (20) for the fifth wicket and a quickfire 35 from just 14 balls with Venugopal Rao (12) for the sixth wicket which included 17 runs in the 18th over bowled by Siddarth Trivedi.
Andrew Symonds (30) and Tirumalasetti Suman (29) were the other notable contributors for Deccan.
Captain Adam Gilchrist was the first to go for 10 in the fourth over after facing 11 balls. The retired Australian, who opened account with a six off Morne Morkel, was LBW to the first change bowler Yusuf Pathan.
Two overs later, the other opener Tirumalasetti Suman fell for 29,holing out to Lee Carseldine near the boundary in the sixth over. The 25-year-old had hit three fours and a six in his 19-ball innings before leaving his side to 42 for two.
Sensing a chance to tighten the screw on Deccan,Rajasthan captain Shane Warne introduced himself in the seventh over against the duo of Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma but he was taken for 12 runs in his first over.
Warne got the turn but Symonds smote him for a huge six.
But,pressure piled on Symonds as Rohit fell, stumped by Naman Ojha for just nine in the 10th over by the end of which Deccan were 77 for three.
Symonds, who smashed a 36-ball 60 in his side’s last match and his first of this IPL,was himself bowled by a Ravindra Jadeja beauty which uprooted the Australian’s timber.
The Australian had hit two fours and a six in his 19-ball innings of 30.
Deccan innings slowed down to 108 for four at the end of 15 overs before Dwayne Smith helped them reach a challenging total.
Deccan Chargers: 166 for 7 in 20 overs. (D Smith 47,A Symonds 30; Y Pathan 3/34,R Jadeja 2/26).
Rajasthan Royals: 113 all out in 19.3 overs (Swapnil Asnodkar 44; Rohit Sharma 3/12,Chaminda Vaas 2/19).
