Providence (Guyana): Hugely contrasting half-centuries by Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq rescued Pakistan from a perilous position as they reached 224/9 against the West Indies in the first ODI at the Guyana National Stadium .

Returning to the team after being omitted from the Champions Trophy in England in June, the mercurial Afridi smashed a top score of 76 off 55 deliveries while Misbah redefined the role of the cautious captain, occupying 121 balls for his watchful innings of 52. The pair put on 120 for the sixth wicket,a new record in one-day internationals for the ground and the best for Pakistan against the West Indies. Their effort was essential after Jason Holder wrecked Pakistan’s top-order batting reducing them to 23/4 after 9.1 overs. The beanpole pacer, playing just his fourth ODI,finished with figures of 4/13.

Brief scores: 224/9 in 50 overs (S Afridi 76,M Ul Haq 52,J Holder 4/13,K Roach 2/38)

India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni: Laxman

New Delhi: Former cricketer VVS Laxman has praised India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for leading the team to back-to-back triumphs at the Champions Trophy in England and Tri-nation series in the West Indies.

“His records (of winning all the world titles) speak for himself. He has that uniqueness to respond to a tough situation with ease. He does not involve himself much emotionally, and that’s his quality. India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni,” Laxman said.

He also said Dhoni should be credited for finding a talent like Jadeja. “Dhoni backed him well especially using Jadeja as a bowler. He is also a great fielder and a handy batsman. Jadeja has emerged as a great asset to the Indian team and Dhoni should be complimented,” he said.

Talking about Shikhar Dhawan,Laxman said: “I mentored him during his stint at (IPL franchise) Sunrisers Hyderabad. He always had the talent and his change in approach is working well for him.”

Laxman also said that India were going in the right direction ahead of the World Cup 2015. “The manner in which we beat England in England (in the Champions Trophy last month) was really commendable. The youngsters should also be credited for the performance. It’s a side that’s going in the right direction ahead of the World Cup 2015,” he said.

Triumphant cricketers return home, without the captain

New Delhi: A few Team India members arrived home on Sunday after their twin wins in England and the West Indies. “Its nice to be back at home after two months, but bad thing is its difficult to adjust (to) the timing!!,” tweeted pacer Ishant Sharma after landing in the national capital.

Rohit Sharma, who flourished after being promoted to the opening slot, touched down in Mumbai. “Touched down in Mumbai finally and such a warm welcome at d airport, really thrilled to see d smile on people’s face..fantastic 2 months!,” he tweeted.

Skipper MS Dhoni, who has been rested from the upcoming series against Zimbabwe, has taken a break and is on a holiday, reportedly in London.
