League leaders Sporting Clube de Goas title hopes were dealt a blow as they were held 2-2 by Chirag United in the 17th round of the I-League at Nehru Stadium,Margao.
Sporting Clube,who saw more of the ball in the first half,took the lead in the 16th minute through Nathaniel Amos,whose shot off Wilton Gomes,took a deflection and caught Chirag United goalkeeper Gopal Das off guard.
Chirag United came back strongly in the second half and equalised in the 48th minute. A combined move between Subair Muritala Ali and substitute Denson Devadas saw the latter send hard shot which found the back of the net.
Chirag kept the rival defence under pressure and took the lead in the 70th minute. Denson sent a long pass from the right flank to Sankar Oraon,who beat keeper Felix D Souza to the far post.
Sporting made two changes to strengthen the midfield,bringing in Steven Fernandes and Bisheshwor Singh in place of Harmanjot Khabra and Biabiano Fernandes,as they tried to find the equaliser. They did just that in the 85th minute.
Joseph Pereira sent a cross into the box from the left flank for Luciano Bobrosa,who relayed to an unmarked Wilton Gomes,and the latter tapped the ball into the net from close.
Sporting Clube remained on top of the standings with 35 points from 17 matches,two more than Churchill Brothers and Mohun Bagan. Chirag United have 18 points from 17 matches.
