Change of heart: Three-member committee to hear Jwala Gutta’s case

BAI president has constituted an independent three-member committee to hear Jwala Gutta's case.

A reconciliation might be in the offing as the Badminton Association of India president Akhilesh Das Gupta has constituted an independent three-member committee to hear Jwala Gutta’s case on the punishment proposed by the Disciplinary Committee,a day after the proposed punishment of a life ban came in for plenty of flak from all quarters.

The new committee will seek her reply within a week on the punishments proposed and after affording an appropriate opportunity for hearing, including her personal hearing if so requested, will take a final decision on the proposed punishment. The committee will submit a report within a month.

However,a press statement from BAI General Secretary Dr Vijai Sinha has said that Jwala will not be considered for selection by BAI till then for any international and national matches. It is unclear if she can travel for the upcoming tournaments — including Denmark Open — on her own expense, given that she was self-funding this trip, given she wasn’t a part of the national camp.

On comeback trail

The star doubles shuttler is on her comeback, and is scheduled to rekindle her succesful partnership with Ashwini Ponappa later this month. The entries were sent earlier, but it is unclear if they will be withdrawn now. The committee will have to come up with a decision within a month.

The BAI Disciplinary committee headed by vice president S Muralidharan had recommended a life ban for Jwala or six years suspension from all badminton activities in the country or a conciliatory re-rapprochement in case she submits an unconditional apology and had left the final decision to the BAI president.

“Instead of taking action on his own,President BAI in consultation with the members of Executive Committee,BAI has decided to constitute an independent three-member committee for issuing a further show cause notice to Ms Jwala Gutta for seeking her reply within a week on the punishments proposed by the Disciplinary Committee in order to satisfy the principles of natural justice and take the final decision on the proposed punishments within a month,” BAI General Secretary Dr Vijai Sinha said in a statement on Monday.

The three member committee comprises Anandeshwar Pandey,Joint Secretary Indian Olympic Association and General Secretary UP Olympic Association,Deepa Mehta,President Luge Federation of India and Swati Shukla,a social worker and former member of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

“The Committee is hereby constituted for issuing a further show cause notice to Ms Jwala Gutta for seeking her reply within a week on the punishments proposed and after affording an appropriate opportunity for hearing, including her personal hearing if so requested,in order to take final decision on the proposed punishment,” he said.

“Till the submission of the report in this regard by the aforesaid committee, the name of Ms Jwala Gutta shall not be considered by the Selection Committee,BAI for participation in any international tournament inside or outside India,” the statement added.
