It’s a long way from scenic Switzerland to humid Chennai, and Stanislas Wawrinka started his preparation for the first event of the year early.
The Swiss world No 13 has been sweating it out during some intense practice sessions at the Nungambakkam facility from a couple of days before the tournaments start. It is rather difficult to adjust to the conditions in Chennai as it is snowing in Switzerland, Wawrinka said on Sunday, adding: It is better to have some time to acclimatise myself to the conditions. I am a bit jet-lagged.
But having had a successful 2008,its the excitement of a brand new season that is gearing up the youngster. The first tournament of the year is very important, especially because its just a few weeks before the Australian Open, he said.
But the first tournament in the season is never easy, Wawrinka said at a press conference on Sunday.
With former world No 1 Roger Federer as doubles partner the two won the Olympic gold in Beijing in August inspiration is always close at hand, and his sights are now set on breaking into the top eight. I will play my best to be in the top eight this year, he said.
