Manchester united midfielder Michael Carrick has backed teammate Danny Welbeck to go on and become one of Englands greatest strikers, and is expecting huge things from the star.
The 21-year-old bagged a double for the Three Lions on Friday in the 5-0 victory over San Marino and has given boss Roy Hodgson a selection dilemma for the Group H clash against Poland in Warsaw on Tuesday.
However,Carrick is convinced that Welbeck is the future of England, and along with United teammate Wayne Rooney, can create fear among worlds best defenders.
I am a massive fan. I am probably a bit biased because of the United connection. But ever since I have seen him,I have been a huge fan and I expected big things of him. He has had a terrific couple of years now, the Daily Star quoted Carrick,as saying.
People were looking at him when we signed Robin van Persie saying,Where is his position, where is he going to fit in? But he showed he is still a major part of it and he was excellent again against San Marino, he added.
We have got so much strength at United, but he has been terrific. If he keeps performing like that hes only going to get better, he said.
Carrick added: Yes,he is talented. He can create and score goals, added Carrick. He can play different positions, can play wide, and can play up top. Hes a real talent.
He is modest, too, what youd expect coming through the ranks at United. The manager sets standards for the young lads and Danny doesnt get carried away and his latest performance for England wont change him at all, he said.
Hell get back and start working hard again and that is what he does best, that is one of his biggest assets, he concluded.
