At least six houses and standing crop spread over five hectares got damaged following a breach in the canal of Upper Sindh Hydel Power Project Phase-II in Ganderbal district on Friday,officials said.
The breach occurred at Panzin-Kijpora village,about 40 kms from here,at 4.30 AM but timely action of the district administration minimised the loss,Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Syed Iftikhar Bari told on phone.
Bari,along with Superintendent of Police Imtiyaz Ahmad,visited the affected village and said two houses were fully damaged while four others suffered partial damages due to the breach.
The paddy crop spread over nearly five hectares of land also got damaged,he said.
The Deputy Commissioner said he has directed Tehsildar to assess the loss and report to him so that compensation is provided to the villagers.
Senior officers of Power Development Corporation also visited the area and inspected the breach to ensure its early repair,he said adding the water through the canal has been diverted and efforts are on to repair the breach.
Superintendent of Police,Ganderbal said two policemen were injured when some “miscreants” pelted stones on a police party which has rushed to the scene to supervise the rescue operation soon after the breach in the canal.
However,he said the situation was brought under control soon after they visited the area.
